SPRING 2023 BULLETIN 169
2023 – YEAR OF BIAS IN IA SPOTLIGHT
Bristol and Bath are going to be at the centre of the Industrial Archaeology universe this year – literally – with BIAS in the front line.
The Association for Industrial Archaeology (AIA) is holding its 50th anniversary conference on our patch 1 – 6 September with a promised packed programme of top-notch events, discussions and lectures.
Conference Secretary and BIAS member John McGuinness says it will “celebrate not only the achievements of the Association over the past half century, but also the spread of Industrial Archaeology to other parts of the world.”
International experts Helmuth Albrecht, Professor for the History of Technology and Industrial Archaeology at the Technical University of Freiberg, Germany, Patrick Viaene, University of Antwerp, Belgium, Massimo Priete, University of Florence, Italy, and Piotr Gerber, Faculty of Architecture at the University of Technology, Wrocław, Poland, are giving lectures.
In place of the traditional Rolt lecture there will be a celebration led by Sir Neil Cossons, of BIAS, Keith Falconer and our friend Prof Marilyn Palmer of the achievements of Angus and Brenda Buchanan. It’s hoped a representative sample of the archive material of the Buchanans, George Watkins and others will be available.
AIA Council members Michael Messenger and BIAS member Geoff Wallis have prepared a programme of visits to local places of interest, starting with a visit to the Museum of Bath at Work, home patch of BIAS Chairman Stuart Burroughs.
And there’s going to be a thinktank on “How do we get young/new people into Industrial Archaeology?” – an open discussion chaired by Zoe Arthurs.
The cost of conference together with the application form will be available in early March. This information and an online conference booking form and information will be available on the AIA website: www.industrial-archaeology.org/conferences/service001/
We also have coming up the Angus Buchanan Lecture 2023, with Dr Cassie Newland at the Museum of Bath at Work on Saturday May 20th. Details in this issue.
